Steve Went His Way

// By Donovan // July 14th, 2009 // No Comments » // Show Updates

Last week Steve definitely “went his way”… all the way to Rwanda!  He took off with a friend of ours to volunteer in a clinic/school and hopefully get some rock climbing in at the world-famous Mount Kilimanjaro.  I’m staying here in Calgary as two and a half weeks notice for an overseas trip that will last anywhere from two to five months isn’t exactly conducive to the contracts that I have already signed for the next few months.

You can track Steve’s progress on his new website www.WheresNagy.com.  It will have random photos from his trip and his Twitter updates.

Have a great trip, Steve!  (I’ll be keeping the show warm until you get back.)

A Fancy New Slogan

// By Donovan // June 2nd, 2009 // No Comments » // Show Updates

Wow! It’s been a while since we posted any updates on here… that’s probably because we didn’t really have any BIG reason to.  We’re slowly working ahead on this idea and will keep everyone posted through this blog.

Today, however, I got a text message from a friend of mine with a cool potential slogan for the show and I wanted to share it with you…

“Some travel with the stars, others under them.”

That catchy phrase is courtesy of Shawn Farquhar.  He’s a two-time world champion of magic, a darn nice guy, and an exceptional friend of mine.  Thanks Shawn!

What To Say?

This is the first “Virtual Producer” post to serve as an example for everyone interested in sharing their stories from around the world and their ideas that will help us to create one heck of a TV show.  What are we interested in hearing about from you?  Here are just some ideas:

  • Travel stories from any place on the planet.
  • Photographs you’ve taken from around the world.  (By “taken” I, of course, mean “photographed yourself”, not “borrowed”.)
  • Ideas for episodes of Going My Way.
  • What to do while in ________________ .
  • “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” stories - just like in Grade 6, only without the awkward oral presentation.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us via a simple online form by clicking here.

By Way of Introduction

When you hear the names Steve Nagy and Donovan Deschner you most likely think: Who?  We don’t take that personally… so don’t worry about our feelings.  That said, we do think that it’s a simple problem to remedy.  So, we created a short video in which both Steve and I introduce ourselves and share a few stories from the years of friendship that we have enjoyed (for the most part).  It’s available on our YouTube Channel, but also right here:

Better Lucky Than Smart

// By Donovan // March 2nd, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Show Updates

A few days ago on my blog I made a post talking about Outliers (the latest book from Malcolm Gladwell).  In it he talks about the importance of luck to any one’s success and with the advent of this television program and subsequent presentations/pitches I could not agree more.  Here is a quick history on how Going My Way began…

Steve Nagy and I have been best friends since high school - despite the fact that only a fraction of those years have actually been spent in the same city.  Between his travels around the world and my professional performing career it’s rare to actually communicate face-to-face.  So… I started thinking of ways to combine my love of performing with his love of travel and… viola!  Going My Way was born.

So now that we had an idea the next step was to look at how to get it made.  I had a vague understanding of how it all worked: we would approach a production company, pitch our idea “cold”, get the standard “don’t call us - we’ll call you” response, and then try it all again with another company.  Here’s where the luck really sets in…

A few months earlier I had helped AMPIA (Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association) with a project and as a “thank you” I was added to their newsletter (”Keep It Rolling”).  My December issue arrived and while casually flipping through I saw an ad for a “Pitch Party” - the entire point of which was for a production company to hear various ideas.  With our idea already in place this was perfect timing.  The party was held in January 2009 - less than one week after Steve would be returning home from university.  With a now complete understanding of the term “serendipity” I RSVPed and we went down to the event in January.

There were 15 minute time slots that you could sign up for upon your arrival.  We grabbed an early slot and began talking to a producer, 40 minutes in our pitch was interrupted with the news that “other people were waiting”.  So we braced ourselves for the “don’t call us” goodbye and were instead treated to a “we’ll call you next week” goodbye.  After getting back in touch we headed into our second meeting wherein we decided that to futher refine our idea we would launch this website and get feedback from the internet (that’s you).
