A few days ago on my blog I made a post talking about Outliers (the latest book from Malcolm Gladwell). In it he talks about the importance of luck to any one’s success and with the advent of this television program and subsequent presentations/pitches I could not agree more. Here is a quick history on how Going My Way began…
Steve Nagy and I have been best friends since high school - despite the fact that only a fraction of those years have actually been spent in the same city. Between his travels around the world and my professional performing career it’s rare to actually communicate face-to-face. So… I started thinking of ways to combine my love of performing with his love of travel and… viola! Going My Way was born.
So now that we had an idea the next step was to look at how to get it made. I had a vague understanding of how it all worked: we would approach a production company, pitch our idea “cold”, get the standard “don’t call us - we’ll call you” response, and then try it all again with another company. Here’s where the luck really sets in…
A few months earlier I had helped AMPIA (Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association) with a project and as a “thank you” I was added to their newsletter (”Keep It Rolling”). My December issue arrived and while casually flipping through I saw an ad for a “Pitch Party” - the entire point of which was for a production company to hear various ideas. With our idea already in place this was perfect timing. The party was held in January 2009 - less than one week after Steve would be returning home from university. With a now complete understanding of the term “serendipity” I RSVPed and we went down to the event in January.
There were 15 minute time slots that you could sign up for upon your arrival. We grabbed an early slot and began talking to a producer, 40 minutes in our pitch was interrupted with the news that “other people were waiting”. So we braced ourselves for the “don’t call us” goodbye and were instead treated to a “we’ll call you next week” goodbye. After getting back in touch we headed into our second meeting wherein we decided that to futher refine our idea we would launch this website and get feedback from the internet (that’s you).
